I invited Viola's friend Lincoln over today for both a play date and to take some Valentine's Day pictures of him. We met Lincoln and his mom Sydney (she has a great blog called Hello Grey Boy) at a baby Halloween party I hosted through Meetup when Viola was 6 months old. Turned out they lived a block or so away from us. Lincoln is the sweetest boy and I absolutely love his look.... I feel that he belongs as a Gap or Urban Outfitters kid model. I had a vision for his shoot, but with 2 toddlers in the studio it went out the window. First, Viola decided she wanted to have her picture taken (finally). She would stand still, smile, pose and say cheeeeeeese! There was no way I could pass up this opportunity or make her feel like I didn't want to take any photos of her. Then she kept photo bombing Lincoln...... I actually got some images of Lincoln without Viola stepping in the way. My vision was to have him hold the red heart balloons with his adorable outfit (his Mom always dresses him the cutest), but Lincoln is a toddler and wanted the Elmo balloon instead..... patience and going with the flow are the keys to great images of toddlers..... in Lincoln's case, also music. This boy loves to dance. I was also beyond excited that I captured some smiles of this very serious little boy. His Mom also made the cute scarf he is wearing..... she also sells them at her Grey Boy store. Also when working with toddlers, breaks are a must. These two were running, dancing, spinning, giving each other hugs and kisses and worked up an appetite. We broke for lunch (food is always a plus while photographing toddlers) and Lincoln actually ate a sandwich. Both continued to pseudo model for the camera while they ate. I learned another trick today for photographing my toddler besides patience and going with the flow..... bring one of her friends along and she'll want the spotlight on her!

I recruited my studio mate Jen Bean to assist me in today's challenge. Of course last night I may have slept a total of 4 hours, Viola woke an hour earlier than normal.... she was being an absolute ray of sunshine at the house, especially when I was trying to get her out the door (note the sarcasm). Kicking and screaming I got her buckled in and headed to Dollar General (they have mylar balloons for $1 as well as great props you are not upset about if they get ruined). Picked up some red heart mylar balloons and a lollipop then headed to the studio. I wanted to be prepared this time. Of course when we get in the door, Viola starts to wander over to Jen's side. She is a toddler after all with her own agenda. Jen managed to lure her back with Triscuits (food tends to work with my child) once I had everything in place. First thing she does is rip the balloons up I had taped to the floor. The Elmo balloon I bought just for her didn't matter anymore, again my toddler wants everything Mommy has. So, again while photographing a toddler patience is the key and you most likely have to go with the flow of the session! Now with my daughter, turns out balloons work..... as well as Jen running around like a crazy person helped too ;) . oh, lollipops work too.... Patience and bribery are the key in photographing my toddler...... having along someone to distract her also did the trick.
Remember, your ideal shoot isn't always going to happen when having your toddler photographed. Let the photographer follow their lead, relax and wait to see what is captured. and as they say..... 3rd time may be the charm! #loriksapiophotography #toddlerphotography #familyphotography #chicagophotographer #toddlerfashion #babyfashion #toddler #familyphotographer #logansquare #humboldtpark #buscktown #family #parents #chicagofamilyphotographer #logansquarefamilyphotographer #humboldtparkfamilyphotographer #bucktownfamilyphotographer #babyphotographer #chicagobaby #chicagobabyphotographer #newborn #newbornphotographer #chicagonewbornphotographer #ValentinesDay #DollarGeneral #Triscuits #ValentinesDayportraits #ValentinesDayPortraitsChicago My daughter had been fed, she was in a good mood.... on the way to the gym a quick stop at the studio for try #2 at her Valentine's Day photos were in order. I figured why not? My toddler has her own opinions and ideas as most toddlers do and she had her own agenda. I decided to try the same outfit again, this time she wanted an accessory which was a belt from my robe as her headband. She also did not want to cooperate with the setup I had in mind and decided to grab some paper flowers I had laying around on my desk. As I mentioned in my first blog post, I am not against future blackmail images of my child. After much patience and letting her be herself and a toddler, I somehow coaxed her into a pseudo setup of what I had in mind for her photos. Again, with a toddler you most likely need to throw your perfect shoot ideas out the window as soon as this little person enters the studio. You just need to follow their lead and laugh, because they are going to do what they are going to do. With no meltdown this time, I somehow coerced her into holding the heart pillow..... Still didn't get any of the shots I had in mind, so I guess the 3rd time is the charm! I'm going to make Daddy come to the studio with me and we will try again.

Camilla was a surprise pregnancy and my sister and brother in law waited to find out the gender until she arrived. I knew all along she was a girl, now my daughters will have a girl cousin who lives close and close to their age to play with! Camilla is a lucky girl with two older brothers and an older sister, she really rounded out the family! I'm glad I waited, there is nothing I love more than photographing newborns who are 10-12 hours old. They're so sleepy, calm and content.... they'll pose without a fuss. I took it easy on my niece, here are some of my favorite images from this morning. My sister had bought an outfit off of Etsy I used a bit this morning, when she is a week old I will be doing another shoot.... this proud Aunt even got a smile out of her! The white blanket in the background was knitted for me by our Grandmother in 1977, it's seen a lot of babies in the family. You've looked at Pinterest, you've picked out the perfect outfits, you have this vision of perfection in your head.... As a parent of a toddler I understand that they march to the beat of their own drum. I tried to photograph my 21 month old daughter Viola alone in the studio today for Valentine's Day...... She was having nothing to do with the idea I had for her Valentine's Day photos..... maybe I should have brought Dad along to assist with this. When photographing toddlers, I like to give them many breaks to explore and play. Every now and then have Mom or Dad get in some pics with them, or place them so I can start snapping away..... I even love the images of them on the move. Viola found an apple on my studio mate Jen Bean's side.... she was cooperating with it so I let her carry the apple and eat it along the way. (last image is a face I know I will be seeing a lot in the future, "Seriously Mom!") Toddlers also have their own emotional schedule that is extremely unpredictable.... Meltdowns can occur, usually towards the end of the shoot which is why I photograph fast and make sure I get the images before they occur. Never has a toddler had a worse meltdown than Viola in the studio.... I chose to document it (future blackmail). We have our ideal images pinned, we bring the cutest accessories. Sometimes they are able to be photographed, sometimes they're not (it's really up to the boss and their mood). My Mom made Viola this adorable fox hat I found.... she won't even keep it on for a minute. With enough patience you get the shot (in the final image you do not see my hand holding the hat down, or would you know I got one shot before she ripped the hat off her head) and it makes it all worthwhile. Trust your photographer. Don't be anxious if your toddler starts acting up, they still feed off of our emotions. They are going to act the way they are going to act regardless.... food as bribery is always good, though I don't recommend a whole piece of fruit since they'll never put it down.
I once had a father sprinkle chocolate chips and puffs from above at his girls, it made for some really cute images and was hilarious to witness. Above all, patience is the key. #loriksapiophotography #toddlerphotography #familyphotography #chicagophotographer #toddlerfashion #babyfashion #toddler #familyphotographer #logansquare #humboldtpark #buscktown #family #parents #chicagofamilyphotographer #logansquarefamilyphotographer #humboldtparkfamilyphotographer #bucktownfamilyphotographer #babyphotographer #chicagobaby #chicagobabyphotographer #newborn #newbornphotographer #chicagonewbornphotographer |
