What to wear, how to prepare your kids, and how to get the most from your family mini session
You finally booked the family photos.
Now comes the question every parent asks:
What do we wear? What if my kids don't cooperate? How early should we arrive? And how are we supposed to get everyone looking at the camera at the same time?
Take a breath.
A seasonal mini session is designed to be simple, quick and fun. You don't need perfect outfits, perfectly behaved children or a Pinterest-worthy plan. A little preparation can help, but the best photographs usually happen when everyone relaxes and lets the moment unfold.
Here are a few simple tips to help you get the most out of your seasonal portrait session.
The goal is for your family to look coordinated—not identical.
Start with one outfit you love and build the rest of the family's clothing around it. Soft neutrals, earth tones, muted colors and subtle textures tend to photograph beautifully.
You don't have to put everyone in white shirts and jeans. In fact, a little variety usually creates a more natural and interesting photograph.
A few things to keep in mind:
Most importantly, choose something that makes you feel good. If Mom doesn't feel comfortable in what she's wearing, she's probably not going to love the photographs—and Mom deserves to love them too.
You do not need to spend the entire car ride saying:
“You better smile for the photographer.”
In fact, please don't. 🙂
Let your children know you're going somewhere to have a little fun and have your picture taken.
Kids don't have to sit perfectly still for every photograph. Some of the best images happen between the posed moments—the laughs, hugs, funny faces and little interactions that actually feel like your family.
I'll guide the session and work quickly. Your job is simply to show up and enjoy your people.
Mini sessions move quickly, and every minute counts.
Plan to arrive about 10 minutes early so everyone can get out of the car, take a breath and settle in.
Give yourself extra time for:
A calm arrival makes a big difference.
A small snack before your session can be helpful, especially for younger children.
Try to avoid anything messy, brightly colored or likely to end up on someone's face or clothing.
Bring water if needed, and save the bigger treats for after the session.
A little post-photo bribe never hurt anyone. 😉
This might be the most important tip.
Your children don't have to smile perfectly in every image.
Your toddler may want to run.
Your teenager may initially pretend they don't want to be there.
Someone may blink.
Someone may laugh at exactly the wrong time.
And sometimes, those are the photographs you'll love the most.
My goal isn't to create a family that looks like everyone else's.
It's to capture your family as you are right now.
Because one day, these little personalities, missing teeth, wild hair and inside jokes will be the things you miss most.
You don't need to worry about posing everyone.
You don't need to know which side is your “good side.”
You don't need to figure out what to do with your hands.
That's my job.
With more than 30 years of experience photographing people, I've learned how to work quickly, read personalities and help even the most camera-shy family members relax.
I'll give you direction when you need it and step back when the real moments start happening.
Yes, you may need a new holiday card.
Maybe Grandma has been asking for an updated family photo.
Maybe you haven't had professional pictures taken since your youngest was a baby.
But these photographs become more than something you post for a few days.
They become a record of a moment that will quietly disappear before you realize it.
The kids will grow.
The clothes will go out of style.
Your life will change.
And one day, you'll be very glad you stopped long enough to be in the photograph too.
My Seasonal Portrait Events are designed for families who want beautiful, professional photographs without committing to a full-length portrait session.
Sessions are limited and offered throughout the year.
Whether you're looking for updated family photos, holiday portraits, photographs of your children or simply a reason to get everyone together in one frame, I'd love to photograph you.
